Crows, watercolour, 2007

Crows are occasional visitors to our winter feeders. I have always found them very elusive as every time I try to photograph them for painting references they leave. I resorted to hiding behind a blind of curtains in the window but, even then, they seemed to have a sixth sense about being watched. Here I captured them just as they noticed me and were about to take off. They truly are, as the poet Pauline Johnson calls them, "Strange black and princely pirates of the skies."
