May

May Pattern, watercolour, 2010

Sometime in May the buds begin to come out and suddenly there is this lovely fresh light green everywhere. To me they look like little round floating balls disguising the branches on which they grow.  A part of our forest has these very old and huge poplar trees. Surprisingly poplar, which are light grey and weedy when young, grow into great big mature trees with gnarly brown bark.

May also gifts us with the beautiful trillium on the forest floor whose petals can be white, a deep burgundy or white with burgundy centres.
