December

Dead Sunflowers, drawing, 2016

Early December can be quite bleak as the reality of the long winter to come hits home. It is hard to believe the sunflowers were vibrantly in bloom only a couple of months ago. Their forlorn browned drooping shapes and angular blue shadows mark the spot where the garden is buried until next season.

As I coloured this image, I realized that my pencil set did not have dark enough brown or green selections. To solve the problem, after using the darkest green and brown available first, I went over the desired darker areas with black. The yellow was also too vibrant for these dead sun flowers, so I went over it with a layer of brown to tone it down.
